The BGN/PCGN system for Kazakh was designed for use in romanizing names written in the Kazakh Cyrillic alphabet. The Kazakh Cyrillic alphabet contains nine characters not present in the Russian alphabet: ә, ғ, қ, ң, ө, ұ, ү, һ and і.
